British summers changed • British houses didn’t
Modern air conditioning is an air-to-air heat pump: it moves heat rather than creating it, so it cools in summer and heats efficiently in winter – more heat energy out than electrical energy in – and it earns its keep all year, especially in the rooms central heating is bad at: conservatories, loft conversions, garden rooms and offices over garages. The noise and looks objections are fifteen years out of date: a modern inverter unit runs continuously at low output, quieter than a fridge, with the compressor outside. Wall-mounted, floor-mounted, ceiling cassette and fully ducted options.
Home installation • it’s usually one room
The bedroom you can’t sleep in – solved, usually in a day. A single-split (one indoor unit, one outdoor) is the simplest and right for most people; a multi-split runs several rooms off one outdoor unit with individual control, and avoids a row of condensers. The connecting pipe is about the diameter of a thick pen.
The survey matters: indoor siting so it isn’t blowing on the bed or desk, outdoor siting for airflow, serviceability and neighbour noise — not on the wall outside your neighbour’s bedroom window – and condensate drainage with a consistent fall, which is the single most commonly botched part of an AC install. Handily, it’s a plumbing job, and we’re plumbers. Most installs are usually permitted development, with exceptions for listed buildings, conservation areas, flats and some new-build covenants.
Commercial installation
YOUR CUSTOMERS WON’T TELL YOU IT’S TOO HOT
THEY’LL JUST LEAVE!
Offices, retail, salons, restaurants and server rooms.
Everything starts with the heat load – glazing and solar gain, people (twenty in a meeting room is twenty small heaters), equipment, and the pattern of use – sized for the peak, because undersized units run flat out and burn out early, and oversized ones short-cycle.
Ceiling cassettes are the commercial default; ducted systems disappear into the ceiling void for high-end spaces; multi-split and VRF give zone control; server rooms get dedicated, resilient cooling sized for the rack.
We install out of hours – evenings, weekends, overnight – so you don’t lose a trading day, and hand over commissioning records, certificates, warranties and F-Gas documentation.
